Why get a survey?

If you are buying a boat then a survey is essential. For many of us a boat represents the biggest capital purchase we will make apart from our house. Not only will a survey give you peace of mind about your purchase, or stop you from making an unwise decision, it can form a basis for negotiation on the price, particularly if there are problems to be sorted. A good pre purchase survey should form the basis of your work schedule for the next year or so.

Insurance companies will generally require a survey if you are buying a used boat and also if it has been a number of years since your boat was last surveyed. This shouldn’t be looked on as just an additional unwarranted expense. An independent and professional examination can highlight existing or developing problems and give recommendation that can improve your vessel and increase its value. At Melfort Marine Surveys, we have a practical and realistic approach to this, an approach appreciated by our clients.

Types of Survey and what they involve

The Pre Purchase Condition Survey

This is generally the most comprehensive type of survey. It requires a full out of water examination to assess the condition of the hull, coatings, keel, rudder, and propulsion machinery and to take moisture readings where appropriate. As far as practical, an examination is made of the structural condition of the vessel, hull openings, the steering system, machinery and ancillary systems of fuel, water, gas, sewage etc as well as spars and rigging. An assessment is also made where possible of the condition of sails, the furnishings and fittings, and the equipment on board. In most cases the client requires the result as quickly as possible and, as soon as complete, a pdf copy is emailed to the client. A bound copy of the report plus a cd with photographs illustrating comments made in the text is posted soon after. A close relationship is maintained at all times with the client. Additional services include oil analysis, basin (alongside) trials, and full sea trials. If a full mechanical survey is required we will arrange the services of a suitable qualified marine engineer.

If you are buying a new boat then it also makes sense to have a condition survey to ensure that the terms of the contract are being met. Basin trials are also to be recommended to ensure that the machinery and the yachts systems are working correctly. A portion of the purchase price should be withheld until the survey is complete.

Insurance Survey

When a vessel reaches a certain age, insurance companies require a survey in order to continue cover. This period varies with different insurance companies, but generally between 10 to 15 years. It has the same requirements as a pre purchase insurance survey with just as thorough an examination of the hull, structure, and machinery but with a more superficial examination of furnishings, sails and equipment. A valuation is made for insurance purposes. The client is supplied with a pdf copy of the report, a bound copy, and a cd with the relevant photographs.

Damage Survey

These are normally instructed by the insurance company although, if you are unfortunate enough to have an accident, they may instruct you to arrange a surveyor for a preliminary assessment. Remember that you should always take whatever steps possible to minimise any further damage. An assessment will be made of the damage and recommendations made as to further action and required repairs. We will liaise with the insurance company, the owner or agent, and with the boatyard or contractor and will supervise any repairs to ensure they are carried out to a high standard.

Valuation Survey

In some instances, such as a revision in the insurance value of a vessel, a valuation alone is required. This is a general assessment of the vessel and equipment, and a valuation based on her market value given a willing buyer and a willing seller. The survey makes the assumption that the vessels structure and mechanics are in a reasonable condition for her age, except in the case where defects are obvious. It is not a substitute for a pre purchase condition survey.
